Gregory Joseph Coelho, the patriarch of the Coelho family, founded the Silver Cloud Estates in The Nilgiris in the early 20th Century and made coffee growing a family tradition. The legacy is now carried on by his son V.G. Coelho who set up Coelho Coffee Exports to export monsooned coffee. The coffee beans are sourced from the Coelho plantations which are situated in a hilly range called the Western Ghats with ideal conditions for the growth of coffee. The beans are of the finest quality. The beans are monsooned to perfection in the Coelho curing works after which they are are ready for shipping
The discovery of monsooned coffee was made quite by accident. During the long voyage from India to Europe, sailing ships carrying coffee were exposed to monsoon winds. The beans on these ships underwent a change of colour and characteristics and the coffee acquired a whole new taste. This new and unique brand of coffee was named Monsooned Malabar AA.
The bags of coffee beans are brought to the monsooning centre where they are spread out to absorb the flavor of the monsoon. The beans are repeatedly raked and turned to ensure uniform absorption of moisture. Finally, further sorting is done to guarantee that only the finest beans reach the customer During this 12-16 week process, the beans swell to nearly twice their original size, develop a pale gold colour and acquire a distinctive new taste.
